The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel on the river Thames, near Waterloo Bridge in London. The whole thing is 135 metres (440 ft) tall and each of the 32 capsule-like "carts" that make up the wheel carries 28 passengers. When it was first built, in 1999, it was the tallest building in London until 2012 when the Shard was finished; it's now the fifth tallest structure in London after St Paul’s Cathedral(365 m or 1200ft), The Gherkin (310m or 1017ft), The Walkie Talkie (305m or 997ft) and “The Arch”(235m or 765ft); and at night, when all its lights are switched off to save electricity, it becomes known as the “Silent Eye”. At night time you can see many other brightly lit things like the London Eye itself, the Shard, Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace and more. On weekends there might be some fireworks over the water too, if the weather permits! It takes around 30 minutes for one full rotation and visitors have a view of the city from an altitude of about 135 meters above ground level. So you will not only get a wonderful experience being inside a big wheel, but also enjoy views which would otherwise require much longer walks, taller buildings or airplanes!
